SailboatCruising.com says:
James Wharram's catamaran designs are known for several unique features that set them apart:
- Inspired by Polynesian Double Canoes: Wharram's designs are heavily influenced by the traditional double canoes of the Polynesians, which are known for their stability and seaworthiness.
- Self-Build Friendly: His plans are specifically designed for first-time builders, making it easier for amateurs to construct their own catamarans.
- Seaworthiness and Stability: Wharram catamarans are renowned for their stability and ability to handle heavy weather, making them suitable for long ocean voyages.
- Simple Construction: The designs often use plywood and epoxy, which are cost-effective and relatively easy to work with.
- Wingsail Rig: A unique sail rig that is simple, aerodynamically clean, and reduces the capsizing force compared to single-masted rigs.
- Adaptable Living Spaces: The designs often include flexible living spaces with awning fabrics, webbing straps, Velcro, and zippers, allowing for various configurations.
- Global Community: Wharram catamarans have been built and sailed in oceans around the world, creating a global community of builders and sailors.
These features make Wharram's catamarans not only practical and seaworthy but also accessible for those who dream of building and sailing their own boats.
'Luana Moon' was built in accordance with the plans, aside from a solid bimini/solar support and being fitted with twin 12hp diesel engines in place of the usual outboard motors. These are fitted in boxes that pivot as the connected prop shafts are raised and lowered by tackles from the cockpit.
Each engine is fed from an adjacent 60 litre plastic fuel tank with a further space provided to carry 80 litres in jerrycans.
With her easily driven hulls, fuel efficient engines and ample fuel capacity, she has the range needed for summer cruising in the Mediterranean.
